Here is a selection of some of the most frequently asked questions about the Washington Semester Program!

No. Undergraduate students from all colleges and majors are eligible. Before applying, all students should determine if the program coursework fits within their major requirements. Students are encouraged to speak with their academic advisers prior to applying.

Yes. Each internship must meet program standards/guidelines to ensure that students have a substantive internship experience. The program reserved the option to deny a student’s participation if their independently obtained internship does not meet program standards.

Upon selection into the Washington Semester Program, each participant will work with the Director of the Washington Semester Program to determine the best course(s) of action to obtain an internship. While students are responsible for obtaining an internship, the program director will ensure that the student is made aware of a variety of internship options. In most cases, the student may need to complete supplemental application materials and/or participate in an additional selection process.

Yes. Out-of-state students are strongly encouraged to apply and are able to receive in-state tuition on WSP courses for the semester. Please note that online and other courses outside the WSP experience are not eligible for the tuition waiver.

Participants must enroll in at least 12 credit hours. In Washington, you will attend two courses: (1) a traditional course taught by UGA faculty and (2) the Washington Seminar (WASH 3400) which will be taught by a variety of guest speakers, both in- and outside of the beltway. In addition to these two courses, students will enroll in internship and/or directed study courses in their respective majors to ensure enrollment in at least 12 credit hours.

The program fee is $5,465. In addition to the program fee, all participants will pay tuition and mandatory fees at UGA. Out-of-state students will pay in-state tuition rates on all courses directly associated with the WSP experience. Each student receives a scholarship of at least $500 from the University of Georgia Foundation. Also, HOPE and other scholarships may be used towards tuition and/or program fees. Lastly, students must pay for all expenses that are not included in the program (i.e. travel to and from Washington and meals). Past interns estimate monthly expenses ranging from $600-$900 per month.

Our program offers course credit (up to 9 credit hours) for every student, and an internship that satisfies the Experiential Learning credit required by UGA (learn more here). Many students are able to graduate on their preferred timeline when incorporating this program into their schedules. If you are concerned about graduating on time, we encourage you to mention our program to your advisor in advance to ensure your schedule is optimized to your personal preference.

Students are strongly discouraged from bringing cars. There is limited street parking available, and parking garages are very costly. Washington’s array of public transportation options will allow you to travel to all areas of the city.
