National Geographic is a multifaceted organization with many functions. The National Geographic Society itself is a non-profit scientific organization that focuses on geography, archaeology and natural science, as well as the promotion of environmental and historical conservation. In addition to its status as a non-profit, National Geographic also includes for-profit sectors such as their National Geographic Magazine and their National Geographic television channel. Because National Geographic has so many functions, it offers numerous valuable internship opportunities. Students can apply for internships in a variety of areas including: photography, journalism, cartography, magazine publishing/design, research, communications, television production, and more.

DC Semester: Fall 2009
School: UGA Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication
Type of Internship: Advertising/Public Relations

Currently, I work for the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement doing research and evaluation on Georgia’s lowest performing schools and am pursuing my Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Georgia State University. My work experience includes research, project management and quantitative and qualitative data analysis. I participated in UGA’s Washington D.C. Semester Program in the fall of 2009, the same year I graduated from UGA. The experience has helped build my career by exposing me to the political process and giving me internship skills from a large nonprofit organization.
