The Washington Office on Latin America is a non-profit that promotes human rights, democracy, and social justice by working with partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to shape policies in the United States and abroad. Each semester, they offer substantive internships to students interested in Latin American issues and US foreign policy. Every semester WOLA’s new interns are paired with staff mentors and absorbed into the work of the organization. They collaborate on a mix of research, analytical, and administrative work, and they are encouraged to get involved in the day-to-day activities of their teams. WOLA selects seven interns per session (spring, summer, and fall), and each intern is assigned to a different program area—communications, fundraising, or one of many policy areas. Interns also get involved in the behind-the-scenes work of running a non-profit organization, including helping with technology, media, finance, and event planning.

I was born and raised in Illinois but moved to Savannah, Georgia shortly before high school. I’ve always been interested in Latin American issues, having spent time in both Mexico and Nicaragua. I spent my junior year at UGA abroad, dividing my time between a semester in Argentina interning for a criminal defense lawyer and a semester in DC interning for the Washington Office on Latin America.

I am currently an International Affairs and Romance Languages student at UGA. I’m finishing up my final term, and I will graduate this Spring, at which point I hope to return to DC. While in the WSP, I interned at the Washington Office on Latin America, a non-profit that focuses on human rights issues in Latin America.
